Dean Malsack Sightings

Watch Dean play Santa Baby during our annual Customer Appreciation Christmas Party. Dean appears regularly at Piano Trends and around Chicago.

Dean also appeared on behalf of Piano Trends during the Chicago Gift Show in January where Piano Trends provides the entertainment for more than 3500 attendees. Here Dean instroduces his backup group "The Invisible Scat Singers and Dean also works the crowd with the Dancing Chefs. Keep an eye out for his next appearances.

Emily Bear and Danny Wright


Emily Bear performed in concert with Danny Wright at the Raue Center and both artists played to standing ovations. Nine year old Emily has appeared at the White House and on Ellen several times as well as playing on Dancing With The Stars this November. Danny with more than 5 million albums sold followed his Raue appearance with a trip to perform in the Caribbean to promote his new recording. Danny also made an appearance at Piano Trends before the concert and was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. Emily and Danny played on the Famous Twin Blue Grand pianos of Piano Trends. Former Trender and store manager Amy Nelson Visits


Amy Nelson was manager and trumpet instructor for Piano Trends Music Company up until 1998 when she moved on to another stage in her career. This November She stopped in for a surprise visit to talk about old times. Amy has gone on to be a principal Trumpet performer on Broadway and is in the middle of a tour with Fiddler and the Roof. Thanks for stopping in Amy. I think your hair was longer back then.

	The musicians of Piano Trends donated their time and talents to help raise money for several Charities including the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. Piano Trends Music donated the use of 5 Grand Pianos including the two famous twin blue grand pianos for the event. The annual event is called the Chill and in addition to the entertainment the event is one of the largest wine and culinary events in Chicago each year. The Chill is held at Chicago's Merchandise Mart every year in November. Pictured are the performers Tony Zirfas, Evan Swanson, David Radford, Joan Hammel, Kathy Fry, Todd Greene, Bobbi Paul, Tim Paul, Dean Malsack and Mike Potts.

Northwest Herald Review: Don't be scared of stellar “Rocky Horror” at Raue

One word comes to mind after seeing the debut of the Williams Street Repertory’s “The Rocky Horror Show:” Wow.
As a Crystal Lake native, I feel qualified to say this is not the type of show you typically find in McHenry County. And for that, this upstart professional theater group deserves my thanks and your support. If you want local theater to continue to push the boundaries, you must be willing to go through the door and buy a ticket. After all, seeing a Chicago-quality show for between $22 and $28 is a bargain.
About 300 people attended the weekend shows Friday and Saturday.
“We’ve been happy with the attendance,” said T. Paul Lowry, producing director for the Raue and Williams Street Rep. “We’re not expecting it to be packed right up front and the people who did show up really enjoyed it.”

Tim and Bobbi Paul with Melissa Manchester after her concert for Open Door Charities at Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin Illinois. The Paul's who own Piano Trends Music donated use of musical equipment used in the Manchester Concert for the kids supported by open Door. Melissa's Song "Come in From the Rain" was dedicated to the Paul's in honor of their 30th Anniversary. Melissa and her husband will also be celebrating their 30th in a few months. The song was performed by Tim and Bobbi at their own wedding and now performed for them by the composer.

Danny Wright and Joan Hammel Set to Perform for HDSA

The Huntington's Disease Society of America Board of Trustees invites you to the 7th Annual Celebration of Hope. The charity fund raising event takes place on Friday evening August 27th at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel Grand Ballroom one West Wacker Dr in Chicago. The program of events begin at 6pm with a silent auction and cocktail reception followed by dinner and honoree presentation. at 830 Danny Wright, world-renown pianist and Las Vegas headliner will entertain with special guest, five time nominee, pop entertainer of the year by the Chicago Music Awards and the evening's mistress of ceremonies, Joan Hammel. Huntington's disease is a hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control, and for which, presently, there is no cure. Proceeds from this event support HDSA's fight to improve the lives of people affected by HD and their families. One of the live auction items will be a special live in home concert by Danny Wright himself with the Famous Blue Grand Baldwin Piano from Piano Trends Music Company. "Goodbye to Love" is a song composed by Richard Carpenter and john Bettis. It was released by The Carpenters in 1972. On the "Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters" documentary, Tony Peluso stated that this was one of the first, if not the first, love ballads to have a Fuzz Guitar solo.
Upon reviewing an old Bing Crosby 1940 film called Rythm on the river, Carpenter noticed that they kept referring to the struggling songwriter's greatest composition, "Goodbye to Love". He says `You never hear it in the movie, they just keep referring to it,' and he immediately envisioned the tune, and lyrics starting with:

I'll say goodbye to love

No one ever cared if I should live or die.

Time and time again the chance for

Love has passed me by...

While the Carpenters were working on the song, Carpenter decided that a fuzz guitar solo should be included. Karen Carpenter called renowned electric guitarist Tony Peluso and asked him to play on the record. Tony remembers: "At first I didn't believe that it was actually Karen Carpenter on the phone but she repeated her name again. ... It was at this point that I realized it was really her and that I was speaking to one of my idols." She told him that she and Richard were working on a song called "Goodbye To Love" and they were both familiar with his work with another band, and that he'd be perfect for the sound they were looking for. Peluso first played something soft and sweet, but then Richard Carpenter said "No, no, no! Play the melody for five bars and then burn it up! Soar off into the stratosphere! Go ahead! It'll be great!"
Carpenter first sketched out the melody while visiting London in late 1971 with Bettis adding the lyrics in early 1972. The finished product was released on June 19, 1972, and reached #7 on the Billboard Top 100. It was the first song written by the songwriting team of Carpenter/Bettis to reach the US Top Ten. However, the Carpenters did receive hate mail (claiming that the Carpenters had sold out and gone hard rock) because of Richard's idea for a fuzz guitar solo in a love ballad, and some audult comtempory (AC) oriented radio stations refused to play the song because of this solo (which may have kept it from reaching #1 on the AC chart, becoming the first Carpenters A-side since "Ticket to Ride" not to be a #1 AC hit). However, many Carpenters fans today still admire the song for its uniqueness.
"Goodbye to Love", with its fuzz guitar solo in the middle, has been described as the prototypical power guitar riff.

Piano History in Crystal Lake

There is an old piano in Crystal Lake with some ties to Chicago History. In particular to the Chicago Fire of 1871. The story that came with a Steinway Seven Foot Square Grand Piano built in 1861 tells of survival from the great Chicago Fire. According to the story the piano was removed from a well to do Chicago Family Home near the Chicago River and was pushed in up to the body of the piano. AFter the fire passed the Steinway was pulled back out and later restored. The piano legs are built from Solid Walnut while the upper body of the piano is solid rosewood. This beautiful piece is on public display in the piano warehouse of Piano Trends Music Company in Crystal Lake. Free showings can be scheduled simply by contacting the company at 815.477.4266. Visiting the piano makes a great field trip for out of town visitors and guests with an interest in either music or Chicago History.

Bach to History!

J.S. Bach, also known as Johann Sebastian Bach, was born on March 21, 1685. He was a German composer and organist who enriched the prevailing German style of music with contrapuntal technique and control of harmonic.

Bach was the youngest child of Johann Ambrosius Bach and Maria Elisabetha Lammerhirt Bach. His father was an organist at St George’s Church and taught him to play violin and harpsichord. All of Bach’s uncles were professional musicians ranging from church organists to composers. It was an uncle, Johann Christoph Bach, who quite famous and introduced young Bach to organ playing.

Bach is believed to be quite of his family’s musical achievements and he ended up drafting a genealogy in 1735 known as Origin of Musical Bach Family.

Pachebel

Bach’s mother died in 1694 followed by his father’s death just eight months later. Bach was ten years old at that time and he moved in with his oldest brother, Johann Christoph Bach, who was an organist at Ohrduf. Bach copied, studied and performed music while receiving invaluable teaching from his brother, who taught him how to play a clavichord. While living with his brother, Bach was exposed to many South German composers like Johann Pachelbel and Johann Jakob Froberger.

Film Bootcamp applications are due on Monday, July 11 and FOCUS applications are due Wednesday, July 13 to the Box Office. I’m so excited for both programs. All of the summer blockbusters have totally peaked my interest in filmmaking. I can’t wait to get started on my action-packed mouse-terpiece. I don’t think any mice have ever won an Oscar... Unless you count those Disney characters. The FOCUS 2011 talent showcase is one of my favorite shows all year. I’m always blown away by the talent in McHenry County. From visual art to fashion, choreographed dance numbers to vocalists, these kids can do it all! Do you have a special talent? Get in on the action and display it! Baldwin Touring Pianos on Display in Crystal Lake

Baldwin Touring Pianos are on display in the Piano Showroom of Piano Trends Music in Crystal Lake. There are four remaining USA handcrafted artists grands that were part of a lineup of special pianos built for Chicago area venues, events and concerts over the past several years. These pianos were never previously available for sale. The pianos have been part of many TV programs including appearances on Oprah, NBC5 and ABC7's Chicagoing with Bill Campbell. Two of these Baldwin Grand are very special as they were built exclusively for the Chicago Blues Fest which is going on right now. These are both Bright Blue (see pic) These pianos have been seen around town and played by the likes of Michael Feinstein, Foreigner, Dennis DeYoung, Arthur Hanlon, Ronan Tynan, Joan Hammel, Dean Malsack, Jeff Jacobs, Danny Wright, Emily Bear, Jersey Boys, songwriters Jimmy Webb and Paul Williams, Cyndi Lauper, Dr. John, and others. They have graced the stages of the All State Arena, UIC Pavillion, House of Blues, Milwaukee Fest, Grant Park, Raue Center, Rosemont, Chicao Merchandise Mart and more. Baldwin Piano Company has authorized Piano Trends of Crystal Lake to sell these pianos for the first time. The pianos are on public display to view and play. As Victor Fabry napped in his hospital bed, a quiet symphony filled his room. The steady pulse of a cardiac monitor marked the progress of his mending heart. Over that beat, the swaying strains of a Brazilian guitarist pumped nearly nonstop from a CD player on the shelf.

For nine days after his surgery at the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute in Morristown, N.J., Fabry soaked up that tranquil, wordless strumming. And while he praised his surgeon, he raved about the musical score that accompanied his recovery.

His heart literally fell in rhythm with guitarist Tomaz Lima. The music became his medicine.

“Very restful, very soothing,” said Fabry, 68, now almost two years removed from the surgery. Immediately after his operation, a live harpist also played at his bedside. “The mind influences your recovery. Anything that quiets your anxiety is powerful.”

Listen carefully and you’ll hear the same refrain at a rising number of hospitals. From Massachusetts General to the Mayo Clinic, patients are hearing the first strains of a harmonious movement — the infusion and inclusion of music in the treatment of ailments, from brain disorders to cancer. This goes beyond the psychological smile favorite songs can induce.

Doctors are increasingly studying — and employing — the physiological dance music does with the body’s neurons and blood-carrying cells.

“We’re in the infancy,” said Dr. Ali Rezai, director of the Center for Neurological Restoration at Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic. During a surgery called deep brain stimulation — performed while patients with Parkinson’s disease are awake — Rezai and his team play classical compositions and measure the brain’s response to those notes. “We know music can calm, influence creativity, can energize. That’s great. But music’s role in recovering from disease is being ever more appreciated.”

“Research has already shown that if you play a piece — like Mozart — at a certain slow beat, the listener will adapt their heart beat to the beat of the music.”

From musical notes to hormone stimulation
The anatomical route musical notes take through the body is indeed a busy highway celebrated in many songs, from head to heart. Based on interviews with neurologists and cardiologists, the journey from an instrument string to your heart strings goes something like this:

Sound waves travel through the air into the ears and buzz the eardrums and bones in the middle ears. To decode the vibration, your brain transforms that mechanical energy into electrical energy, sending the signal to its cerebral cortex — a hub for thought, perception and memory. Within that control tower, the auditory cortex forwards the message on to brain centers that direct emotion, arousal, anxiety, pleasure and creativity. And there’s another stop upstairs: that electrical cue hits the hypothalamus which controls heart rate and respiration, plus your stomach and skin nerves, explaining why a melody may give you butterflies or goose bumps. Of course, all this communication happens far faster than a single drum beat.

Before jetting through the blood stream, the signals are converted again — to hormones. At the University of Munich, Conrad was able to show that critically ill patients required fewer sedative drugs when they listened to one hour of Mozart piano sonatas. As expected, the patients’ blood pressures and heart rates eased with the music.

But what surprised Conrad is that the patients also showed a 50 percent spike in pituitary growth hormone, which is known to stimulate healing. Today, at Massachusetts General Hospital, Conrad asks his patients (or their families) in the surgical intensive care unit what music they’d like to hear; if neither is can provide an answer, he often plays Mozart.

Healing dose of Lady Gaga?
Classical is a common pick among doctors and therapists who use melody as a healing tool. The vibrations of stringed instruments in particular are said to mesh with the energy of the heart, small intestine, pericardium, thyroid and adrenal glands, according to a soon-to-be-published study by researchers at Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute in New Jersey. But what about rock or hip hop? Country or house? Does the body react as positively to Lady GaGa as it does Bach? Do you heal faster with Beethoven or a dose of Miley Cyrus?

“I recommend listening to joyful music as part of an overall prescription for maintaining good heart health,” said Dr. Michael Miller, director of the center for preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Joyful? “Music that brings out a natural high in order to maximize endorphin release,” explained Miller, whose research (presented last November to the American Heart Association) showed that hearing your favorite song can cause tissue in your blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow.

Miller examined 10 healthy, non-smoking volunteers before and after they grooved to tunes of their choice and measured a 26 percent jump in the diameter of their upper arm blood vessels. (Conversely, after wincing through music they hated, the volunteers’ blood vessels narrowed by six percent.)

Prescription for helping brain injuries heal? At Cleveland Clinic, Rezai and other neurosurgeons collaborate with The Cleveland Orchestra to compose classical pieces to play for patients during brain operations. Rezai then gauges how individual neurons fire when the head hears those foreign chords and cadences, and he compares that reaction to how the neurons behave when familiar songs fill the operating room. Hair-sized sensors placed in the brain translate those signals to an amplifier. Study results are expected in three to six months.

The firing of a neuron “may sound like static to some, but it’s music to my ears,” said Rezai. Patients tell him when the music soothes them, and Rezai can hear the corresponding changes in a single neuron. The research, he said, can serve as a keystone for other studies of music’s potential in treating people with traumatic brain injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis and severe depression.

“This gentle but powerful instrument goes to the deepest places of the body that need to be healed,” said Tami Briggs, a pioneer in “harp therapy” who has played at the bedsides of hundreds of patients, including many at the Mayo Clinic. “I’m not a nurse, but I know enough about the monitors, and what I see is blood pressure usually goes down (when I play), oxygenation rates go up. That’s connected to that more peaceful place, where they are taking deeper breaths.”

The harp is the only instrument that has 20 to 50 strings and is open, unlike, say, a violin. When a harpist strikes a chord, she also opens vibrations in strings just above and below the few she plucks. Those vibes, Briggs said, are absorbed by the body.

“When I play, it’s as subtle as watching somebody relax in the littlest ways,” Briggs said. “They fall deeper into their bed.”
